The Future of the Patra Port
It is broadly accepted that the Port of Patras plays an important role in the economic development of the City of Patras, as well as of the broader region and Greece in general.
The accommodation capability of the current Port is however limited, due to the lack of space on land in order to cope with the greal traffic of trucks and passenger vehicles.
There are also great difficulties in its connection to the intercity network, since the Port is tightly surrounded by the city and therefore traffic is conducted through the city network which is completely inadequate.
Due to the above mentioned problems, the Patras Port Authority S.A. in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Physical planning and Public works, completed the research and the construction of the New Port on Dymaeon coast has already began since 1997, This location lies 1 km to the north of the already existing port and is expected to accommodate all kinds of combined transports.
The New Port will be connected with the northern Detour of Patras through hub K5, via connecting roads alongside river Glafkos, making thus access to the Port easier and also relieving the traffic problem of the city.
