The first part from Thessaloniki to Serres is a Motorway. The part from Serres to Promachonas will be or is Constructed as a Motor-Road.
This axis is the end of Paneuropean Corridor (Berlin - Prague - Budapest - Sofia - Greek-bulgarian inner EU-border) and also the main connection of the Greek road network with Bulgaria. The completion of the axis from Thessaloniki to Sofia is a priority project both on national and European level.A It is being constructed as a dual carriageway with two traffic lanes and a hard shoulder per direction.
The MEPPPW has carried out construction works in previous periods on two sections of the axis - 17.5 km of 18/21m-wide dual carriageway. In 1998 the responsibility for the preparation of designs and the construction of the remaining axis was assigned to Egnatia Odos AE
The axis has a total length of approximately 96 km
